KUALA LUMPUR (March 11): In the spirit of Visit Malaysia 2020 (VM2020), Tourism Malaysia has embarked on a strategic partnership with Visa Malaysia to boost the country’s tourism industry.

Tourism Malaysia director-general Datuk Musa Yusof expressed confidence that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between both parties today would help promote Malaysia as a preferred travel destination and enhance the experience of visitors to the country, especially in the shopping segment.

"With Visa coming on board as a preferred payment partner to help promote Malaysia, we are confident that we will be able to attract more inbound tourists,” he said in his remarks at the signing here.

The MoU was signed by Musa and Visa Malaysia country manager, Ng Kong Boon.

According to Musa, shopping was the biggest share of tourist expenditure for Malaysia, taking up 35.2 percent of the total tourist receipts from January to September 2019, at RM23.3 billion.

This showed an increase of 14.4 percent compared to 2018, he said.

Meanwhile, Ng said the partnership would leverage on Visa Preferred Merchant Programme (VPM) which features a variety of rewards and benefits popular among tourists visiting Malaysia.

The benefits available for Visa cardholders cover areas such as dining, shopping, family entertainment and medical wellness.

“We are able to leverage our analytical capabilities to provide insights on travellers visiting Malaysia and our extensive global network to further help Tourism Malaysia promote Malaysia as a leading tourist destination,” he said.
